Shirley Radcliff Bruton

Shirley Radcliff Bruton is a poet, modern dancer, choreographer, and performance artist. She scripts, stages, and directs interdisciplinary artists and unskilled performers to convey her conceptual narratives. Shirley has worked both in California and New York City, where she lived for nine years while working for the Merce Cunningham Dance Foundation.

Bruton loves the macro lens and often uses it in her performance work. It gives her the ability to examine things up close — woven fabric, sections of the human body, insects, moss, etc. The subtleties of black and white photography can create a mysterious mood, like shadows, becoming an entrance into another realm of seeing. Her poems compile essences and desires and access the tactile to discover and observe life.
